Types/ Patterns
Migration is the movement of a group of animals to a given area. There are many different types of migration patters that are used by many different species. Some species will move in horizontal direction across the earth’s surface whether it be a few miles or a few thousand. There is also vertical migration, which is most common with certain types of fish in the ocean, some birds and many large land animals that move on mountainsides. Vertical migration is the least common with only a few spices that do this. Many animals migrate to reproduce and to where food or living environment is more desirable during certain seasons. Weather this be the dry and wet seasons in the zone around the equator or the change in season of summer and winter for food. There are also many animals that have set territories that they move around in. Territorial migration is very common in the equator region and in dry desert areas where water and food is scarce. When they migrate animals tend to follow the same path every year to insure that they are returning to the same spot that they were born and raised in. The most common type of movement is in the north and south direction, which is used by birds, butterflies, some fish and turtles, and some large animals. (Encyclopedia British)

What Effects Migration
Migration can be affected by many different environmental factors. Environmental factors will lead to how much food there is for the animal to eat and that is one on the main reason that they migrate. Also depending on the season the temperature will affect what the animal does whether it migrates to lower altitude or migrates away for the season. Some animals migrate during the seasons and will spend the summer season in the upper northern hemisphere and move closer to the equator for the colder winter season that they wouldn’t be able to survive. With bird some of them use the land to navigate where they are going so if the land where to drastically change they would have to reroute themselves to find their area of rest. This has happened before and with tracking of birds over the course of years you can see slight changes in the root that they take and some of that can be related to the change on landscape especially coastal regions. Birds
Birds are one of the most widely known species to migrate some during season change. But there are also many species that do not migrate at all. They tend to migrate at low altitudes with a varied number of speeds. They travel in multiple airways around the earth that allow birds to travel as fast and as far as they need to go. The most active migrant birds are insectivores, their food supply consist of mostly insects. These are bird like Swallows and Warblers, which are found mostly in Europe. These birds move north to south with the change of weather and to find a more plentiful food source. They go as far as the southern tip of Africa and as close as the Mediterranean. In North America the most common migratory birds are ducks, geese and hummingbirds fly south for the winter and return for the summer for food. They will travel to most of Central America and as far as the middle of South America. Other birds that live in the Tropical regions of the world don't migrate in the north to south during times of season change. These birds travel during the wet and dry seasons in different zones along the equator. (Encyclopedia British)

Fish
Fish are one of the lesser-known migrant species. There are 3 main types of fish migrating oceanodromous, anadromous, and catadromous each of which has their own way of migration. Oceanodromous is where the fish live their whole life in the ocean and move to other parts to span and feed. There are many species of fish that do this type of migration but the most common are Herring and Cod. Another type of migration is Anadromous is where the fish live and feed in the ocean and go to freshwater to spawn. There are also many different fish that do this type of migration with the most widely known is the salmon. Catadromous the fish go to the ocean to span and fresh water to feed, the most common type of fish for this migration are ells. These migrations could happen multiple times during any species of fish. The usual migration times are once the young have hatched they travel to where the adult are and another is when the adult fish swim back to the spawning ground and then back to the feeding area. With the young not being as strong as the adults the young are usually born upstream allowing them to migrate downstream to the feeding ground with the current. Where as adult fish have to swim against the current to get back to the breeding grounds. (Encyclopedia British)

Large Land Animals
With their being so many different types of migration with land animals. There are many different ways that animals do this from short migration to long migrations over thousands of miles are the reasons why are up to the climate and nature of the animal. In North America there are many animals such as Elk, Bison, and Caribou and Moose. These animals move on a seasonal patterns for food and tend to follow the same path every year. Large African animals migrate based on the wet and dry seasons this can be multiple times a year with Zebras traveling upwards or 1,000 miles for seasonal migration. There are also others that start as a group and migrate but spit off in search of better places for food and water. Also their Elephants are not huge migrant animals like most people think they are more of wanderers looking for the best place for food and water. These types of migrations are ways of each species of population management for spices weeding off the week(Encyclopedia British).
